Second Clinic Day

By: Joelle Coffey June 18, 2024

Today’s update is from Joelle.

Today I woke up at 5:30 am and prepared for the day. I ate a pancake, some eggs and bacon. We listened to a Hermann sermon today including verses in Jeremiah and Ezekiel. We left on the bus to go to a town that had no official roads. Making it so that the ride to the church was shaky. Since it was cloudy there was low clarity making it hard to see out the windows. Laura and I played a round of tic tac toe on the window as the time passed. While going up the mountains we saw animals like cows, pigs, dogs and cats. Near the location that we were serving at today, there were strawberry farms.

After we unloaded all of the material we had been organized into groups. I got put into triage and it was a new experience. It would begin at the double doors where people walked in and we would write down details like name, age, weight, temperature, heart rate, O2 levels and blood pressure. It was very eye opening to see the low oxygen levels to the patients and the one lady that looked to have fused joints. It really helped me see the health issues that some face and I was glad to aid as much as I could. And realized that although in America there is “horrible healthcare”, people who came to the churches would be grateful to have access to what some consider “horrible healthcare.” I was very excited for my new position because I was able to use more of my broken Spanish. It was very nice to be able to talk to some of the younger kids who were with their parents because they were easier to talk to. After we had gotten all of the information written down on the blue pad we would send them over to sit and wait for the doctor or dentist.

As less people came, I was able to talk to the other translators and it was a lot of fun. I finished the afternoon with a sub sandwich and Doritos. As we left I spotted my first avocado tree. When we returned to the compound I got to play basketball, soccer and volleyball with all the other students and adults. I ended the night with 2 grilled chicken breast’s with vegetables and rice, the seasoning es muy bien would eat again!

Adios!

  1. Madeline Louise, I am so proud you, and the team, for being the hands and feet of Christ.
Psalm 144:12 Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, and our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace.

Thank you for being a pillar. 💕Mom

  4. Joelle and Team –

Thank you for your daily posts. It is so good to hear how God is using you to bless others. I was reminded at how much a kind act, reassuring word and helping hand can make a meaningful difference. Very often, it is the little things that are authentic, that can change someone’s life.

As you say, some things that we take for granted or are frustrated with in the United States, would make all the difference to someone else. We are praying for you all and confident that you and the ministry there is making a huge difference.

Glad to hear that Doritos have made it to Guatemala 🙂

Que el Dios de toda Paz os bendiga y os guarde.

Love to you – Mike (Dad)

  7. It’s so much fun to hear about your daily routine! I know every team has different routines (GO, GREEN)! We’re praying for good health, sleep and your shelter and food! Do they have “Little Debbie’s“ where you are. It’s probably better if they don’t! Any funny stories? Here in Ga we need rain. Plants are turning into Crispy Critters (cereal from yester-year). But we’re sure you’ll bring the rain when you come home and also dear stories of the purely grateful people you have met. Copeland, lead your team with Christ-like humility. When people disappear to themselves, then Jesus shows up! Your beautiful smiles speak volumes, even if you have no fluency in their language. A simple touch on their hand or shoulder gives the heart hope and energy. I’m trying to think of some funny story to tell about Copeland, but I promised I would behave this year! 🤣 This is Wednesday. You have 3 more days until Sunday and home. I know that these magnificent people are realizing what Christ did for them and will want to follow Him as you do! Love, Pal (GO, GREEN TEAM)! 🫛

  9. So proud of you all. What a gift you are laying at the feet of Jesus- your time, talents and heart!

He is good and faithful and will multiply your offering in the way only he can!

I can imagine many of you are being stretched out of your comfort zones. Let Jesus fill in the gaps and wait expectantly for him to show up.

Can’t wait to hear about it all in more detail.

Lauren, I love you to the moon and back. So proud of you, girlie.
